How Tiger Balm Began

Tiger Balm, “the legend in a bottle”, is a topical rubefacient with a fascinating history. A Chinese herbalist living in Rangoon developed a balm made from essential oils using an ancient formulation originally developed for Chinese emperors. He sold it from his Rangoon medicine shop and after his death one of his two sons began selling the product in Malaysia and Singapore. As a symbol of the potency of the balm, he would travel with a tiger – the symbol of strength and vitality in the East. During the 1920’s, his sons established a manufacturing base in Singapore and named the product Tiger Balm. Today, Tiger Balm is sold in more than 100 countries and used by millions.

What is Tiger Balm?

When Tiger Balm is applied to the skin, the rubefacient and analgesic properties provide symptomatic relief from the pain and discomfort associated with the muscular aches and pains of muscle and joints, arthritis, rheumatism and backaches. The active ingredients in camphor and the essential oils in Tiger Balm dilate the peripheral blood vessels and bring blood closer to the skin’s surface. This produces increased circulation and warmth. The increase in blood flow speeds up the healing process. This also increases the temperature of the skin and the sensation of warmth serves as a distraction from the pain. The local analgesic effect reduces the sensation of pain.

Positioning	Red is the original product and is positioned for stronger pain as it has a higher % of some of the oils and produces a greater sensation of warmth.	White is a gentler, colourless ointment and is popular with the female consumer.	Liniment is ideal where there is a need to cover a large surface area, such as a warm up rub or massage.
Indications	For the temporary relief of muscular aches and pains of muscle and joints, arthritis, rheumatism and backaches.
Precautions	For external use only. Not to be taken orally. Not to be used on infants under 2 years of age, unless on the advice of a physician. Avoid contact with eyes. Read package insert before use
Directions	Apply to affected areas 3 to 4 times daily.
